President Maithripala Sirisena, this morning, marked International Day of the Girl Child with a tweet.

The tweet read, ‘Little girls with dreams become women with vision. Happy girls day!’.

International Day of the Girl Child is today (October 11) and is celebrated internationally and locally with a series of events.

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka is holding a special walk and event this evening.

Statistically women make up 51% of the population but the girl child is seen as disadvantaged in what is come to be known as a patriarchal society.
