The first shipment of rice ordered from India is scheduled to arrive at Colombo Harbour, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said.
The arriving shipment contains 12500 MT of Nadu rice.
This is the first shipment of a total 72000 MT “Nadu rice” ordered from India. The orders were placed on the direction of the Cost of Living Committee to overcome rice shortages and price manipulations by unscrupulous elements.
The Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce will receive the imports and will make it available to Lanka Sathosa under the Ministry.
The wholesale cost is expected to be Rs 72 per Kg while the retail price is to be around a low and affordable Rs 74.
