The official term of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council ended last night.
As the Provincial Council election is not on the cards yet, the administrative powers of the council have now been placed under Provincial Governor Marshal Perera.
Although the Sabaragamuwa PC election was scheduled for this year, it was postponed indefinitely after the government presented amendments to the Provincial Council Elections Act.
The amendments, which propose 30% representation for women and a mixed electoral system among other things, were passed by Parliament with a two thirds majority.
The government has stated that the PC election will take place next year, under the new electoral system.
