Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa made history yesterday by raising a question for the first time after he became an MP in the current Parliament.
Rajapaksa, known for his stoic silence during Parliamentary proceedings, asked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe when the Local Government election will be held.
Rajapaksa's first question came two years after the current Parliament convened.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, in response to Rajapaksa's question, said the Local Government polls would be held in January, next year.
Wickremesinghe explained that the LG polls had to be delayed due to various practical reasons.
He also added that party leaders could make a decision on the Provincial Council elections later.
The Prime Minister also requested the MPs representing the Joint Opposition to assist the SLFP an the UPFA in maintaining peace in the House.
