September 11, 2017

The Western Provincial Council this afternoon approved the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, which seeks to hold all provincial council polls on the same day.

Accordingly, forty-five members voted for, twenty-eight members voted against and 4 abstained from voting on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

In passing the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, the Western Provincial Council joins the North Central and Eastern Provincial Councils.

The Northern, Uva and Southern Provincial Councils have disapproved the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, leaving the North Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces to decide.
