Lalith Weeratunga, Anusha Palpita File Appeal Against High Court Verdict Sentencing Them To 3-Years RI

Lawyers appearing for Former President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and former Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Director General Anusha Palpita have filed a petition at the Appeals Court against a High Court verdict that found them guilty.

On Thursday (September 7) the Colombo High Court found Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita guilty of misappropriation of Rs. 600 million belonging to the TRC, which was used to distribute ‘sil redi’ to would-be voters in the run-up to the 2015 Presidential election.

The two men were sentenced to three years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 2 million each as well as pay Rs. 5 0 million each to the TRC.

On Thursday, lawyers appearing for Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita made known their decision to file at the Appeals Court against the High Court decision that found their clients guilty.
