Speaker Karu Jayasuriya this afternoon signed the amended Local Government Election Bill, passing it into law.
The amended Local Government Amendment Bill was passed in Parliament on August 24, with 120 voting for, none against and 44 abstaining.
The amendment to the Local Government Bill seeks to change the electoral system to a hybrid of the First-Past-The-Post and Proportional Representation system.
60 percent of the members will be chosen through First-Past-The-Post system and 40 percent on Proportional Representation (PR) basis.
