The Gampaha Magistrates’ Court this morning released on bail Brigadier Aruna Deshapriya Gunawardene and Sergeant Siriwardene,  arrested for involvement in the Rathupaswela shooting in 2013.

The Brigadier, the Sergeant and two other Sri Lanka Army officers were arrested for complicity in the shooting that killed three people – one of them a 14-year-old boy - and injured as many thirty-three others.

The incident occurred when members of the Sri Lanka Army called into quell a crowd of protestors in Rathupaswela opened fire at the crowd.

The crowd were protesting against a factory in Rathupaswela that they alleged was contaminating drinking water.
