Government To Intervene To Improve Three-Wheel And School Van Service: Three-Point Recommendation To Be Adopted

The proposal brought by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to implement a number of recommendations made by the committee appointed to improve the quality of public three-wheel and school van services, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Accordingly, the following recommendations will be implemented to improve the quality of public three-wheel and school bus services:

·  The subject will be considered under the provincial list

·  A National Technical Committee will be established to help prepare regulations and minimum standards for improving the quality

·  The use of safe taxies instead of unsafe three wheelers under the long-term policy of the government regarding public transport will be encouraged

The Department of Motor Traffic estimates that there are more than 1.1 million three wheelers and 30,000 school vans at the end of 2016.
