Trade unions of the Auditor General's Department yesterday launched a protest in Colombo demanding the government to pass the National Audit Act without further delay.
They said introduction of the National Audit Act was one of the key promises of the ruling alliance before it came to power.
The process has come to a standstill although the Cabinet gave its nod for the legislation.
“The clauses of the National Audit Act have been amended 22 times. Even the constitution of Sri Lanka has been amended 20 times,” said the representatives of the protesting trade unions.
"The National Audit Act is supposed to empower the Auditor General to prevent bribery and corruption. Why are the politicians afraid to ensure the passage of the legislation,” they asked.
They blamed the Prime Minister's Secretary, Saman Ekanayake, for delaying the passage of the legislation
“We have a feeling that he is exceeding the powers of the Cabinet,” the representatives said.
They vowed to continue the union action until the Cabinet ensures Parliament ensures the passage of the National Audit Act.
