The government's much-talked-about investigation arm, the Police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) is now facing closure, informed government sources said.
None of the serious cases of the corruption, investigated by the FCID, have produced results. President Maithripala Sirisena has publicly claimed that the FCID is only going after the 'sprats' while the big fish remain unaffected.
They said the government had realised that the FCID was gradually becoming an 'ineffectual' body.
When contacted by Asian Mirror, an informed Police source said the FCID should not be blamed as it had forwarded 52 files to the Attorney General's Department for legal advice.
"Without sufficient advice from the AG's department, we can't arrest or prosecute suspects. The AG's Department should be held responsible for the failure," he added.
However, an AG's Department spokesman who wished to remain anonymous said the legal advice had been delayed as there were 'chinks' in the investigations.
"When there are loopholes in the investigations, we can't proceed with legal advice. Sometimes, we had to send these files back to the FCID. It's not clear whether it's their lack of expertise or some other issue. But, from our side, we identified a number of issues concerning the FCID investigations," he explained.
The official said the AG's Department even hired new states counsel to expedite action on the corruption investigations.
