The government is planning to make Kandy a ‘mega city’ by linking Kadugannawa, Wattegama and Thumpane, Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
He made these comments while attending a ceremony to vest the Dangolla and Herassagala underground water plant and pumping station with the people.
Minister Ranawaka said that there were many obstacles in linking Kadugannawa, Wattegama and Thumpane to Kandy, such as providing water and drainage systems.
Traffic congestion in the city is also cause for concern as with other areas of the city, the Minister said.
He said the government was trying to tackle the problem by shifting the administration to another venue and the commercial city to another venue such as Matale as well as developing the Peradeniya University area separately.
The Minister said the government was also planning to strengthen the transport system and would begin next year.
He said a transport hub linking Kandy Good shed, Hospital, William Gopallawa Mawatha, upper Peradeniya Road, Station, Bus stand, Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Super market will be constructed as part of these plans.
The government is also planning to build a housing scheme for professionals in the city and there will be many more cities with housing schemes for professionals, he added.
