The government started the construction work of the first two projects to generate electricity from garbage, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena today, in Kerawalapitiya, yesterday.
There projects were as a sustainable solution to the problems caused by improper garbage disposal.
Under this new initiative, a sanitary based eco-friendly method for final disposal of garbage would be introduced. It is the same method adopted in many developed countries.
KCHT Lanka Jang Company has invested Rs. 27 billion for these projects, Megapolis and Western Province Development Ministry said.
In line with this project, a garbage collection center will be established in Aruwakkalu in Puttalam.
The construction work of the entire project will be completed within next two years.
Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, John Amaratunga, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Deputy Ministers Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Nimal Lansa, Chief Minister of Western Province Isura Dewapriya and the Secretary to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development Dr. Jagath Munasinghe were present at the event.
