Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake has not attended today's Cabinet meeting, informed government sources said.
The Cabinet meeting took place under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena, this morning, amid speculation that Karunanayake might resign from his Cabinet portfolio.
Political observers assumed that Karunanayake would make a statement at the Cabinet meeting today, explaining his position on the matter.
Many Cabinet members, who attended the meeting today, were of the firm view that Karunanayake, the Finance Minister at the time of the bond issue, should leave the Cabinet until the end of the investigations.
Government sources said the Prime Minister had informed the President that Karunanayake would announce his decision within the next two days.
Ministers Thilak Marapona, Navin Dissanayake and Dr. Sarath Amunugama have been suggested as possible successors of Karunanayake as the Foreign Minister.
