A controversy has been created around Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake over the bond fiasco due to divine intervention, former President and Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Mahinda Rajapaksa told a local newspaper.
"They were the ones who defamed my family. They made tales upon tales. We pleaded to gods about this matter. Now, the gods have punished them," the former President, who is known to be a firm believer of Astrology, said, in a brief interview with the 'divaina' newspaper.
Rajapaksa, however, was conspicuously absent among the Joint Opposition MPs who signed the no-confidence motion against Karunanayake.
"This is Dhitta dhammavedaniya Karma," Rajapaksa said, indicating Karunanayake had committed 'bad karma' that would have to be paid off , in this life time.
"Now the people are watching the government's course of action in this regard. They can't remain silent. I heard some UNP MPs are also planning to quit the government over Karunanayake's matter," he said.
