Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara has said that terrorism is not over in the country and a resurgence of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was possible in the North.
Addressing a meeting of civil organizations and religious leaders in the Jaffna the IGP said that while the Special Task Force (STF) and the Police were already working together, public assistance was also necessary.
“Even though the civil war spanning 30 years is over we can’t say that we have completely eliminated terrorism,” he said. “ The seeds of the LTTE still linger.”
He said that while many LTTE cadres had given up their weapons at the end of the war, there was more weapons unaccounted for in the North.
“It is also difficult to change the mindset of those that have been rigorously trained in the LTTE mindset,” he said.
“These things still linger on.”
The Inspector General of Police said that while the Special Task Force and the Police had joined hands at eradicating the menace of terrorism in the country, the support of the public too, was necessary.
“The public, state officials and Police must maintain good relations in order to work together to eradicate any seeds of terrorism,” the IGP further said.
