Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF) Convener Lahiru Weerasekera arrested for forcibly entering the Ministry of Health and damaging public property, was further remanded till August 4 by the Colombo Magistrates’ Court.

The Colombo Magistrates’ Court also further remanded four other university students attached to the IUSF until August 4, for forcibly entering the Ministry of Health and causing damage to public property.

On June 21, university students protesting the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) forcibly entered the Ministry of Health premises and caused damage to public property by taking down name boards and burning them.

The university students were agitating for a meeting with the Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, but the protestations were of no avail.

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Police was called in to mitigate the situation and Police arrested a number of students including the IUSF Convener.
