“The Cabinet makes decisions on behalf of the future generation of the country; Cabinet Ministers, I Must say, are not babies,” said Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena.
Speaking at a public meeting in Galle, on Saturday, the Minister said the government’s duty is to make policy decisions, without pandering to the interests of political parties.
“I saw some media reports where opposition MPs had said the Cabinet was unaware of decisions made by the government. It is completely baseless. The Cabinet makes policy decisions after extensive discussions. The Cabinet ministers are not babies. They are representatives of the people. No one should belittle the importance of the Cabinet,” he added.
“When the government planned to set up a Free Trade Zone in Koggala, there were protests. Similarly, when we try to sign an agreement for the development of the Hambanthota harbor, there are protests. We have to understand that these protests are politically motivated. While the government makes plans for the future of the country, these protestors only think of their petty political agendas,” the Minister stressed.
He said the government would proceed with its plans, despite protests and agitations.
“We have plans to create tens of thousands of jobs. All our efforts are aimed at achieving these targets. Politically motivated protests are of very little importance to us,” the Minister said.
