Shikhar Dhawan was unbeaten on 64 as India moved to 115-1 at lunch on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
Cheteshwar Pujara (37) was the other not out batsman, putting on 88 so far for the second wicket with Dhawan after the tourists won the toss and chose to bat in Galle.
India handed a Test cap to all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Sri Lanka brought in debutant Danushka Gunathilaka for the game.
The three-Test series will be followed by five ODIs and one T20 between the two nations.
