The Sri Lankan Human Rights Commission has written to President Maithripala Sirisena against harassment meted out to parties conducting memorials of war victims in the Northern province.
The Human Rights Commission's letter said Elil Rajendran, a priest who conducted memorials for war victims, had been summoned by the Police, a few times.
The Commission said attempts to thwart such memorials stood in the way of post-war reconciliation in formerly war-affected areas.
The Commission stated it decided to write a letter to the President after taking into consideration numerous complaints received by its members on attempts to block commemoration of victims.
The body urged President Maithripala Sirisena to make necessary steps to prevent any such issues.
