The new community based power generation project titled as 'Sooriya Bala Sangramaya' or battle for solar energy will commence today.

The main objective of this initiative is to establish one million domestic solar power units throughout the country.

The main ceremony in this regard will be held at the BMICH this evening under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has planned to transform every house to a power plant and to purchase additional power generated from them. Under this project, one million houses will be connected to the net metering system. The solar panels will be provided to the households at concessionary rate.

The President's official residence will be transformed into a small power plant this evening as the first measure of the project.

The pilot project in this regard will be carried out in Negambo and Kotte areas. The ministry expresses belief the programme will help to add another 100 megawatts to the national grid.
