Sarath Weerawansa, elder brother of National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa, was arrested today by the FCID over alleged misuse of state vehicles of the Presidential Secretariat and the State Engineering Corporation when Wimal Weerawansa was a minister.

FCID had attempted to record a statement from Sarath Weerawansa on several occasions earlier. However, he said he is unable to give a statement due to health reasons. The FCID, on August 22, informed Colombo Fort Magistrate that they have been unable to record a statement from Sarath Weerawansa and sought a court order. The Magistrate called for a JMO report on Sarath Weerawansa's health. However, he appeared before the FCID to give a statement today.
