Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) General Secretary and former Eastern Provincial Councilor Poopalapillai Prashanthan was released on bail by Batticaloa High Court over a double murder in 2008.

On October 23, 2015, Kaththankudi police arrested Pubalasingham Prashanthan following a complaint made last by a sister of a victim, who is said to be an eyewitness to the murder.

She has told police that she did not come forward with the information earlier due to fear for her life.

The suspect has been charged for a double murder at Arayampathy, Kaththankudi, on December 13th, 2008.
