Public Health Inspector’s Association Chairman Upul Rohana stated that 894 businessmen were charged for selling food not suitable for human consumption during raids carried out from August 22 to 28.
Food which were not suitable for human consumption were destroyed in 12428 business places, during the same period. Raids by Public Health Inspectors were carried out to coincide with the National Food Safety Week conducted by the Ministry of Health and Nutrition.
Around 1800 PHIs throughout the island participated in the raids where 17469 places were inspected during the week.
The use of proper color coding in soft drinks were given special attention by PHIs. 22771 unsealed and not properly color coded soft drinks bottles were taken into custody.
Places where long distance buses stop for food were also taken into special consideration by the inspectors. Public have been warned about 205 such places.
