UPFA Galle District MP Ramesh Pathirana hit out at Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, alleging that he has degraded the honor of the parliament.
Addressing a recent meeting in Galle, Pathirana pointed out that that there are 51 'Joint Opposition' members and they were not given adequate time to speak at the parliament. They are cornered by the government. Opposition's speaking time is managed by Tamil National Alliance and J.V.P. which indirectly supports the government, Pathirana pointed out.
He also said that the JO had to complain to Inter-Parliamentary Union to gain the rights. Afterwards, the Speaker started giving more time for the JO MPs to speak, Pathirana said.
He also said that it was a shame that the Speaker was undermining democracy in the parliament.
Pathirana's comments came in the wake of a warning by the JO that it is considering a no-confidence motion against the Speaker if he signs the Office on Missing Persons Bill into law without considering its protest.
