President Maithripala Sirisena today made a controversial statement, threatening to reveal damning secrets which will bring total discredit to the pro-Rajapaksa Joint Opposition members that they will be destined to eternally wander in the streets instead of governing the country.
He made this statement at the rally in Matara to mark the first year in office of the government.
"They are threatening to form a new party. Let them. We will see about it then. We revealed a lot of secrets about their misdeeds before January 8 last year. If they form a new party, we will reveal secrets that will condemn them to total oblivion that they will be destined not to govern but to wander in the streets" Sirisena said in an uncharacteristic burst.
Sirisena also said that he will never let corrupt people to return to power. "We will govern till 2020. Then we will see how we govern the country afterwards" he said.
It should be noted that Sirisena's threat echoes a similar threat made by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa during the 2015 Presidential Election race. "I have files about all of them. I will not release them" he said, suggesting that those who had defected his government had things to hide.
