Sri Lanka's Sumeda Ranasinghe finished 36th in the men's javelin throw qualification round, taking the last place out of the athletes who completed the event successfully.
Ranasinghe scored a distance of 71.93 metres, far below his personal best.
Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago, a country of 1.3 million people, led the field in the qualifying round with a distance of 88.68 metres. He was followed by two Germans, Johannes Vetter and Julian Weber, Japan's Ryohei Arai, Czech Republic's Petr Frydrych and Kenya's Julius Yego. Braian Toledo of Argentina was the 12th and last to qualify for the final with a distance of 81.96 metres.
