The government has initiated steps to introduce a Prime Minister System compatible with the parliamentary system and systematically adjust parliamentary affairs government sources said, adding that with the introduction of a new constitution, the presidential system will be abolished.
It is reported that the changes were introduced according to a suggestion made by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe regarding the current parliament and that better implementation will be carried out in future.
A Senior Minister of the Government stated that Sectoral Oversight Committees and Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE), are up to developed country standards and has started taking necessary steps to modernize parliamentary affairs under the Prime Minister System.
The procedure to bring the standards of parliaments of developed countries has already started by introducing ‘Ask the Prime Minister’ programme where the Members of the Parliament are able to ask questions directly from the Prime Minister. This echoes the system in place in the UK Parliament which has an 'ask the Prime Minister' session on Wednesdays.
