Britain's Adam Peaty clocked a time of 57.55 seconds in his 100m breaststroke heat at Rio 2016 to set a new world record.
He was the first to break a world record at 2016 Rio Olympics.
Peaty, 21, is a strong favourite for the event having won gold in both the 50m and 100m breaststroke at last year's world championships.
And he backed up that status with a stellar swim on the opening day of competition in Rio as he trimmed 0.37 seconds off the old world record - a record which he himself already held.
The race semi-finals are later on Saturday night, with the final on Sunday night.
