Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray said that the Jaffna University incident where two student groups clashed over a cultural event provided an opportunity for the racists in both the north and the south.
Speaking at a press conference at the Governor's sub office in Battaramulla, Cooray said that both the university and the police are conducting investigations into the incident.
If the clash occurred because a Kandyan 'wes dance' was not allowed, it is not good for the country, Cooray said. He added that in the south, cultural events of all types were taking place. The same should apply to the whole island, he also pointed out.
The incident is harmful for the reconciliation process and therefore the truth should be revealed, Cooray also said.
