The FICD today sought an arrest warrant through the Interpol from the Fort Magistrate's Court against former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga over a complaint on alleged financial misappropriation during the purchase of MiG aircrafts for the Sri Lanka Air Force in around 2005-2006.

Weeratunga had been issued notice to appear in court today and the notice had been sent to his residence in Sri Lanka. It was handed over to his relatives since he was not present at his residence.

The Fort Magistrate heard the submission of the FCID and decided to give the decision on the request on July 18.

Weeratunga was the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia from 2006 to 2015. He is now said to be residing in Ukraine.

Sri Lanka recently came to an agreement on extradition.
