Sri Lanka Medical Council President Professor Carlo Fonseka made a controversial statement today, stating that he will not allow the registration of SAITM graduates as doctors even if a court order is given in favour of the students.
He made this observation speaking to the media, following the court sessions regarding a writ petition filed by a female student at the Court of Appeals.
Fonseka pointed out that a panel of 10 distinguished medical practitioners have concluded that SAITM is not suitable to produce medical students and the situation remains as it is.
When the petition was heard today, five parties, including the GMOA, the Government Dental Surgeons' Association and the SLMC requested to act as intervening parties in the petition. The Court of Appeal fixed the order on allowing their request to August 2.
The petition was fixed for support on October 12.
