The new Governor of Central Bank Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy said that the primary objective of the bank will be to ensure macro-economic stability and the financial stability of the country.

Making his inaugural speech as the new Governor, Coomaraswamy recalled that the bank had 'an awesome reputation' in the 1970s, when he first joined. He asked the staff to work with him as a team to build the reputation and credibility of the bank.
Coomaraswamy said that for much of Sri Lanka's post-independent history, politics has interfered in economics. The Central Bank needs to convince politicians that good economics is good politics and find a way to give the correct advise the government to steer the country forward, he pointed out.
He revealed that the President advised him to take straightforward decisions with no fear, and that he will work according to the President's instructions. Furthermore, the Prime Minister informed him of the vision for the future of the country, Coomaraswamy added.
