Discussions are underway to reunite the opposing camps of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, in an attempt to bring back the 'Joint Opposition' MPs under the party leadership, political sources said.
The SLFP is facing a possible crisis with the 'Joint Opposition' supporting former President Mahinda Rajapaksa threatening to form a new party to face the Local Government Elections.
UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera and MP Kumara Welgama are reported to be involved in the reconciliation talks, with the Local Government Elections also in mind.
The 'Joint Opposition' MPs have demanded that withing the SLFP, their representatives must be given the same treatment as the MPs who support the government.
However, the possibility of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister being appointed Prime Minister will not be taken into consideration in these talks as the Maithripala Sirisena camp is strongly opposed to such a move.
