The United People's Freedom Alliance, led by President Maithripala Sirisena, said the party officially expressed its displeasure over the re-appointment of Arjuna Mahendran as the Central Bank Governor.
He said the party was of the view that the Central Bank Governor was not suitable to hold the officer for another term.
Meanwhile, Co-cabinet spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne, addressing the Cabinet briefing yesterday, said he personally did not think Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran’s term should be extended.
However, the Minister said the President should make a final decision on the matter.
“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion but that does not make it the stance of the government. In the end, the decision is up to the President. I have always been against Mahendran’s appointment from the start, from the time it was suggested to Cabinet,” Minister Senaratne said.
