All Ceylon Customs Service Union has requested the President to order the public destruction of the large stock of cocaine seized earlier this week.
The ACCSU states that even though officials seize large amounts of drugs, since court cases pertaining to such seizures tend to continue for years, people become suspicious as to what happens to such seized stocks.
In a letter addressed to the President, the union also warned of the likelihood of such stocks returning to the market by illegal means due to the action of a corrupt or incompetent official.
The ACCSU urged the President to keep a small stock of the cocaine for the judicial purposes and to order the destruction of the rest.
Authorities seized around 90 kg of cocaine from a container in Orugodawatte container yard earlier this week. This was the largest stock of cocaine seized in the island to date.
