Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran will be given an extension and will be in office after June 30, Minister Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that Mahendran has been cleared by the Supreme Court regarding the alleged bond scam at the Central Bank.

In this aspect, is was wrong to accuse the Governor, he added.

Meanwhile, when journalists queried as to what became of the special working committee appointed by the Prime Minister to investigate the matter, Kiriella said that the investigation is done by the COPE committee.

Several SLFP Ministers in the government have demanded the removal of the Governor while the UNP continues to back him.
