The government has no plans to dissolve the FCID as it was claimed by JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti recently, Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said yesterday.
Answering a question from the journalists at a function yesterday the Deputy Minister insisted that the FCID will strengthen further. If there were any wrongdoers within the government they should also be investigated by the FCID, he added.
JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti recently said that he was informed of a move to dissolve the FCID by its officers, when he had appeared there to give a statement.
According to Handunnetti, the officers claimed that their Identity Cards will not be renewed after June 30, when the term of the FCID is scheduled to expire.
However, Ajith P. Perera insisted that Handunnetti's statement was baseless. There was no need for the officials at FCID to be disheartened as it will never be disbanded, he added.
Meanwhile, newly appointed IGP Pujith Jayasundera had also insisted that the FCID will not be disbanded.
The FCID was formed on February 26, 2015 with the aim to investigate major financial crimes and other related wrongdoings. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe informed Parliament last week that the FCID had completed investigation into 44 cases and sent details to the Attorney General.
On the advice of the Attorney General, legal action has been proceeded on six of those cases so far.
