JVP MP and its Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath plead guilty for reckless driving and not preventing an accident and was imposed crown charges of Rs 1500 by the Traffic Magistrate of Colombo today.

He was acquitted and released on a third charge of drunk driving. Police had reported that there was the smell of alcohol from his mouth. However, since it could not be substantiated, he was released from the charge.

He has already paid Rs 17,400 as damages to the telephone post, the court was also informed.

Herath met with this accident on Monday night when his vehicle collided with a telephone post. He was arrested and released on police bail.

He later refuted allegations that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and said that he collided with the telephone post when he tried to avoid a pedestrian.
