Former Senior DIG Anura Senanayake and former Narahenpita Crimes OIC Sumith Prasanna were remanded till June 9 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris over the murder of former Sri Lanka rugby player Wasim Thajudeen.
The court considered the submissions of their lawyers and the Attorney General before taking this decision.
The lawyers of the two suspects said that the charge of conspiring to murder does not apply in their case. The alleged suppression of evidence is a bailable charge, they said.
However, the AG said that the two police officers had investigated the murder as an accident, and therefore there was doubt that they concealed vital details intentionally.
Meanwhile, the court also observed that the two suspects could interfere with witnesses, given that they are police officers. Meanwhile, their lives also could be in danger if they are released on bail, the court noted.
