Leader of the House, Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella said that authorities will take relevant legal actions against ragging in universities.
“Ragging in universities is prohibited through a bill in the Parliament. A set of laws have been passed by the Parliament which allow punishing students who engage in ragging. The issue here is that the law not being operational,” a statement issued by the Ministry quoted Kiriella.
“As the government, we will enforce the law accordingly. The law wasn’t operational in the past, but this is ‘good governance’. Journalists were killed, media organizations were set ablaze, people were kidnapped, Chief Justice was removed etc. during the previous regime. ‘Good governance’ government will enforce the law accordingly, unlike the previous government”, he added.
