A special gazette notification will be issued to reduce polythene usage, said President Maithripala Sirisena.

Although the government had appealed earlier from public to minimize the polythene usage but since the public responses were not adequate, the gazette notification will be effected from 1st January, Sirisena said.

He also said that the gazette notification is due considering environmental issues.
