Breaking Barriers: How Parliament Adapts for Sri Lanka’s First Visually Impaired MP

November 19, 2024

A special programme has been arranged for Sugath Wasantha de Silva, the first-ever visually impaired Member of Parliament in Sri Lankan history. De Silva, who also serves as President of the Sri Lanka Council of Visually Handicapped Graduates, was elected as a National List MP representing the National People's Power (NPP).

This initiative marks a historic and significant step toward ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all representatives in Sri Lanka’s legislative process.

Secretary General of Sri Lanka Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera stated that comprehensive arrangements have been made to accommodate De Silva’s needs, covering activities from his entry into the chamber to his participation in voting.

To ensure convenience, De Silva has been allocated a seat closest to the chamber entrance from the ruling party side. During voting, in line with parliamentary standing orders, he will express his choice vocally.

Further measures include providing parliamentary documents in braille, reflecting Parliament's commitment to inclusivity. Additionally, a dedicated officer has been appointed to assist De Silva throughout the day, ensuring his needs are met both in the chamber and within the Parliament complex, Rohanadeera said.

Parliamentary assistants are also on standby to address any immediate requirements during sessions. The Secretary General confirmed that similar support will be extended during committee meetings to ensure De Silva’s full participation.
