Former DIG Vass Gunawardena, his son and four others were sentenced to death for the murder of businessman Mohammed Shiyam by Colombo High Court a short while ago.

The case was heard by trial at bar comprising three judges, namely, Lalith Jayasooriya, Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena and Amendra Seneviratne.

Former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his son Ravindu Gunawardena, Sub Inspector Indika Bamunuge, Police Constable Gamini Sarath Chandra, PC Priyanka Sanjeewa and PC Kelum Ranga were accused for the killing of businessman Mohammed Shiyam, whose body was recovered from a thicket at Dompe in May 2013.
