President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the Finance Minister to increase the tax imposed on beer with less than 5 percent alcohol content.

This tax was earlier reduced under the budget proposals.

Alcohol prices generally increased following the budget proposals, with a bottle of beer showing a price increment of Rs 30.
