Former Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena refuted the government's claim that nearly six percent of GDP has been allocated for education through the budget, adding that he will reveal the 'truth' to the Parliament in near future.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake stated during the budget speech that the government allocated 5.41 percent of the GDP for education. A number of concessions were proposed through the budget for the development of school and education sectors. The government said that it allocated four times more funds for education than the previous government.
However, speaking to a vernacular newspaper, Gunawardena said that these claims were false. The government has not allocated that amount of money to education and is playing a number game, he said.
