Abolition Of Executive Presidency To Be Effective After Sirisena's Term

Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that the abolition of executive presidency will come into effect at the end of President Maithripala Sirisena's term in office.

The Cabinet gave its approval to the proposal made by the President this morning to introduce legal provisions to abolish the executive presidency and to change the electoral system.

A Cabinet subcommittee was appointed to look into the matter and make necessary suggestions in two weeks. The legislation process is expected to begin thereafter.
