Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran has demanded President Maithripala Sirisena to take immediate action on behalf of the political prisoners currently engaging in a hunger strike in several prisons across the country.
In a letter sent to the President, Wigneswaran recalled that the president has given a promise to take a final decision on releasing Tamil political prisoners before November 19.
However, if the strike is to continue till that day, lives of the prisoners engaged in the strike would be in danger, Wignaswaran said in his letter.
In such an event, the government will surely be rejected by the people of North, Wigneswaran observed. Therefore, the president should give a fair solution to the matter, he argued.
