UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena expressed his opposition to the appointment of retired IGP Frank Silva to the National Police Commission and said that the Speaker has been notified of the matter.

Addressing a press conference today in Colombo, Gunawardena said that Silva is an individual who was once penalized by the courts in a Fundamental Rights petition. The courts ordered him to pay compensation to the petitioner in this case, Gunawardena points out.

Therefore, the notion of independence and impartiality of the NPC is challenged by such an appointment, he argued.
