MDMK chief Vaiko on Tuesday urged all countries in the world to exert pressure on Sri Lanka to release Tamil prisoners there who are on a hunger strike seeking their release.
"I appeal to all countries in the world to do their duty of exerting pressure on Sri Lanka to release Eelam Tamils languishing in jails there for many years," he said in a statement.
"The nations should realise that human rights are being trampled by Sri Lanka by hoodwinking them", he said.
Alleging that Eelam Tamils were imprisoned in Sri Lanka based on "false cases" in 14 jails, he said Tamil prsioners in such jails were on a hunger strike for the past three days seeking their release.
In an act of solidarity, a general strike is proposed to be held in Vavuniya in Sri Lanka on November 13 to press for their release, he said.
"I appeal to Tamil organisations (in Sri Lanka) to make the general strike a success on November 13," he said.
